Care instructions for synthetic hair
Wigs and hairpieces made of synthetic hair are very popular and widespread.
Today, synthetic hair fibres are of such convincing quality that they can hardly be distinguished from human hair visually and are available in many authentic & on trend hair colours. The memory effect of synthetic hair fibres ensures that the hair retains its original shape after washing.
However, synthetic hair does not have the same properties as human hair, despite its optical similarity. For example, it is sensitive to heat and therefore cannot be styled with a hair dryer, curler or straightener (unless specified as Heat Styable Fibre). Parrucche recommend & provide products designed especially for synthetic hair as conventional care products, and those used for natural hair, are not suitable for synthetic hair.
We have provided some steps below on the best way to clean your synthetic wig, and also a handy downloadable PDF accessible here.
How often should synthetic hair be cleaned?
With synthetic hair, the recommended frequency of cleaning depends crucially on the intensity of use. Regular care increases the life of the synthetic wig or hairpiece, our recommendation for daily average use is to clean the synthetic hair about once a week, or around 4 to 6 wears.
Step-by-step instructions for cleaning synthetic hair
Step 1: Detangle
Before you wash, make sure you carefully detangle the hair using a wide tooth comb. Start from ends and work toward the root to decrease shedding.
Step 2: Rinse
Use lukewarm water and rinse from roots to ends, with a shower or tap running the water in the same direction as the hair.
Step 3: Shampoo
Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water, add about a 50p size of Synthetic wig shampoo to the water, then fully submerge your wig, gently dip and swirl the wig to clean.
If your wig has a hand-tied cap construction, its best not to submerge, but to loosen shampoo in your hands and work through the hair, making sure that the hair is travelling in the same direction. DO NOT rub hair as this may cause tangling.
Step 4: Rinse
Rinse thoroughly under cool running water until water runs clear, but do not rub or agitate the hair.
Step 5: Condition
Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water, add about a 50p size of Synthetic wig conditioner to the water, then fully submerge your wig, gently dip and swirl the wig to condition.
If your wig has a hand-tied cap construction, its best not to submerge, but to gently lather the hair with a small amount of Synthetic Conditioner taking care not to go to near the handtied knots, also making sure that the hair is travelling in the same direction. Do NOT rub hair as this may cause tangling.
Step 6: Rinse
Let lukewarm water flow in the same direction of the hair to avoid tangling. Squeeze and press the hair; do NOT wring. Tip: Towel blot to remove excess water.
Step 7: Dry
Air dry on a folding wig stand, Do NOT BLOWDRY and Do NOT use heat to style synthetic fibre (curling irons, flat irons or blow dryers) as this will damage your Synthetic wig.
*if your wig is a Heat Stylable synthetic wig then please seek advice from your Parrucche consultant.
Tip: Gently part the hair with a wide-tooth comb before the wig dries.
